After almost eight hours by car, we have reached our destination: Todtnauberg in the district of Lörrach. Here, in the far south-west of Germany, Markus Vienenkötter opened his mountain store nine years ago. We can well understand why. After all, the landscape in the Upper Black Forest with its mountains, forests and cozy villages is perfect for postcards. In other words, the world is still in order here. But time has not stood still here either. "Many retail businesses have had to close in recent years," says the store owner. "If you want to remain successful, you have to evolve."

The mountain store transforms shopping into an experience

The mountain store's product range has changed constantly as a result. In addition to fresh fruit and vegetables, hearty stews and tasty sausages, the mountain store also offers clocks in the typical Black Forest style, which are particularly popular with tourists and are made by the store owner himself. The goods are offered in a cozy atmosphere that invites you to linger and browse . "Here in Todtnauberg, we make most of our sales with food that we source from regional producers we know personally," explains Markus Vienenkötter. "But the handcrafted woodwork is also an important part of our range and one reason why we are located here in the region have a unique selling point here in the region."

New ideas take root in the Black Forest

To keep it that way, the store owner is not resting on his laurels. On the contrary: by setting up a second store in nearby Todtnau a few years ago, the couple established another mainstay. In the past, the mountain store was often paid for in cash via a trust fund. "In both stores, however, we are finding that more and more customers want to pay by card or digitally," reports the entrepreneur. "We're also not always on site to operate the till."
